2 Peter 1-2:14 God's Goals for Us
11Simon Peter, a servant an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received the same precious faith as us, through the justification of God and our Savior, Jesus Christ: 2through the KNOWLEDGE of God and of Jesus our Lord, may GRACE and PEACE be multiplied to you.
3Just as His divine power has given to us ALL things pertaining to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that called us to glory and virtue; 4through which, are granted to us exceedingly great and precious promises so you can be partakers (become, grow into) his divine nature, having escaped the corruption, by lust, of this world. 5And also giving [constant; careful effort] and add to your faith virtue (some scholars say the word here implies 'exhibit virtue-energy-vigorous exercising of their faith) and add to virtue knowledge; 6And to knowledge, self-control [put aside your own desires] (so you will become more patient and godly); to self-control add patience and to patience godliness (God likeness, follow His example of behavior); 7to godliness, brotherly kindness (which will lead) to brotherly love.
8If you possess these things in abundance you will not be [standing idle] in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9However, he that lacks these things is blind and [spiritually short sighted] and has forgotten he was [cleansed] from his old sins. 10[So, give more] diligence, beloved, to make your calling and election (fact that you were CHOSEN) sure (confidence); for if you do these things you will never stumble. 11And an entrance will be richly supplied into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
12So, I won't be negligent in reminding you of these things, even though you know them, and are strong (stedfast) in the truth. 13Yes, I think it's fitting, that as long as I'm in this body, to stir you up by reminding you, 14[Because] I know that shortly, swiftly, my body will die, just as our Lord Jesus has shown me (John 31:18-19).
15Also, I will endeavor to ensure that you will be able to remember after I'm deceased. 16When we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ we did not (bring) a cunningly devised myth but were eye witnesses of His majesty. 17Because Jesus received from God, the Father, honor and glory when their came a voice, by excellent glory, "This is my son, in whom I am well pleased". 18We heard this voice, which came from heaven, when we were with Him in the holy mount (sacred divine presence).
| Note: "Holy Mount" is a reference to a sanctified place, a metaphor. |
19We also have (proof) in the sure word of prophesy, to which, you'd do well to heed, just as you would to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the day star (Jesus, Rev.22:16) rises in your hearts; 20Knowing first, that no prophesy of the scripture is of any *private interpretation (separately applied or explained). 21Prophesy didn't come by the will of men but holy men of God who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
| Note: *private interpretation='it's own' interpretation, or not isolated from what the scripture says else where. |
21There were false prophets among the people even as there will be false teachers among you who'll secretly bring in heresies of destruction (bringing a different doctrine) even denying the Lord that bought them (claiming Jesus was only a prophet) and bring themselves to swift destruction. 2And many will follow their [highly destructive] ways, and cause the truth to be spoken of as evil. 3And through [greediness and fraud] with words [molded to suit their vain imaginations] they will make merchandise of you (we are simply a way for them to make more money, a commodity or means to accumulate wealth or power-rent, buy cars, etc.); whose judgment [from of old] is not idle, nor is their destruction [resting]. 4Because if God spared not the angels that sinned but cast them into hell and delivered them into the [pits] of darkness (to be held) for judgment; 5or condemning, over throwing and turning to ashes the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, making them an example to those who live ungodly lives; 7and delivered Lot who was a just man, [worn down] by filth and wickedness, 8because that [just; innocent; holy] man, living among them and seeing and hearing of their unlawful deeds day in and day out, [tortured and tormented] his soul, (proving) 9the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and reserve the unjust to the day of judgment to be punished;
10But mostly those that walk after lusts of the flesh, (rather than the spirit) (are) unclean and despise [supreme authority]. They are presumptuous, self-willed and are not afraid to speak evil of [glories](spiritual powers). 11[On the other hand] angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring railing accusation against them before the Lord. 12However, being as natural brute beasts, these, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of things they do not understand and will utterly perish in their own corruption. 13Receiving the reward of unrighteousness as those who count rioting a pleasure [during the prayer hour]. They are defiled and [tainted], reveling in their [deceit] while they feast with you; 14having eyes full of adultry (against God) and have not ceased from sin (1 Peter 4:1); enticing; unstable souls; and a heart exercised with [self-indulgent] practices; cursed children.
