Genesis 1:1
In the beginning "God" "created" the "heaven" and the earth (see also Colossians 1:16).
1. What was the first name God used to describe Himself in His Word?
2. What does the name mean?
3. Is it singular or plural?
4. Does it matter??
5. Not only was the earth created but something else was created also, what was it? Where is it?
Genesis 1:2a
And the Earth was without form and void (void in the Hebrew is empty ruin); and darkness was upon the face of the deep....
1. Without form? Void (empty ruin)? God just created it how could it be an empty ruin?
2. What happened between the earth's creation and verse 2?
(Scholars love to debate this but in the scheme of things it doesn't matter very much, God did not find it important enough to clarify this little mystery. Yet it is the greatest of entertainment to toss into a group of Christian friends and let everyone give an opinion).
Genesis 1:2b
And the 'Spirit of God' 'moved' on the face of the waters.
1. Who is the "Spirit of God"?
2. Is there and action verb in this sentence? What is it?
3. Who took "action"?
4. Up to now only one [person] has been introduced, so now we have 2 who are they?
Genesis 1:3a
And God "said",....
Ponder: The voices of God (Psalms 29) are listed. 'Said' is a common word in our vocabulary. However, 'God said' should give us a very vivid picture each time we read it in scripture.
1. Study the voices in Psalms 29.
2. Then re-read Genesis 1:3.
Genesis 1:3b
Let there be light: and there was light.
1. Was the 'sun' planet created at that moment?
2. Or was God telling the heavy cloud cover to move?
Genesis 1:4a
And God saw the light, that it was good:
1. Is it possible that, just like the painters of today, God looked upon His master piece and thought it was turning out very well indeed? You will notice as we go along that God says this often.
2. Do you think He was bragging or simply stating an obvious truth?
Ponder: Is it possible that we can learn from these words that it is okay to admire our accomplishments and not be bragging?
Genesis 1:4b
And God divided the light from the darkness.
1. In your own words describe all the reasons you think God might have divided the dark from the light.
Genesis 1:5a
And God called the light day, and the darkness He called Night.
1. God names things. Do you think He stopped after the sixth day of creation?
2. How about after the Old Testament, do you think He stopped naming things then?
Genesis 1:5b
And the 'evening' and the 'morning' were the first day.
1. Doesn't that seem backward? Shouldn't it have said, "morning and the evening were the first day? Why do you think it was stated this way? Was God working then at night? Or was simply
evening when He finished for the day and so He stated 'evening' first?
Ponder: A silly question? There are no silly questions? God does ALL things for a reason.
Genesis 1:6-8
And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
1. God creates the firmament, but where? Literally, Heaven? Sky? The planets around us?
2. What day was this?
Genesis 1:9
And God "said", let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
1. Didn't He just do this on the second day?
2. Why do you think God added, "It was so" to this verse?
Genesis 1:10
And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
1. Who named the land and the water?
2. 'And God saw that it was good', what do you think this means?
Genesis 1:11
And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass (the correct translation would have been 'sprout'), the herb yielding "seed", and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose "seed" is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
1. Can you see God's plan for the earth's vegetation above?
2. What is the plan?
3. Look up the word "propagate" in the dictionary.
Genesis 1:12
And the earth brought forth grass (the correct translation would have been 'sprout'), and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
1. Why did God repeat this verse twice?
2. Is there and important message in this verse? If so, what?
Genesis 1:13
And the evening and the morning were the third day.
1. Do you think there is a significance in what day each thing was created?
2. If so, what do you think it might be?
Genesis 1:14-15
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
1. What firmament is God working with now?
2. What lights is He creating do you think?
3. What will these new 'lights' be for?
Genesis 1:16
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
Ponder: Wasn't the greater light for the day created already?
1. What great light is to rule the night? It can't be 'stars' because the verse clearly states: 'the stars ALSO'.
Genesis 1:17-19
And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
1. After God 'made' the lights, what did He do with them?
2. What did the 'Artist' think of this part of His masterpiece?
3. What day are we up to?
Genesis 1:20
And God "said", Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the "open" firmament of heaven.
1. What kind of firmament did God mention here? What do you think it means?
2. What two things did God create in this verse?
3. What was to 'bring forth moving creatures'? How many?
Genesis 1:21
And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
1. Did God name any of the 'moving creatures'? What did He call them?
2. 'After their kind', what does this mean?
3. Can you name some "Winged Fowl" and some 'living creatures the waters brought forth'?
Genesis 1:22-23
And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
1. What is a blessing? If you have a Bible Dictionary look it up.
The act of declaring or wishing, Gods favor and goodness upon others. The blessing is not only the good affect of
words; it also has the power to bring them to pass.
2. So God is making a what? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
1. What is God creating today?
2. What do you think 'creeping things' are?
Genesis 1:26-
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
1. Who is "our"?
2. What is their 'image'? In other words, how are we like "them"?
3. What is dominion?
Genesis 1:27
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; 'male and female' created he them.
1. God has introduced another creation in this verse, what is it?
Genesis 1:28
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
1. What blessing (declaration) did God cause to 'come to pass' in this verse?
Genesis 1:29 ( a bit of hint here...this is at the time of creation before the 'fall' of man).
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
1. God has introduced two new names in this verse. What are they?
