The Book of Genesis
Chapter 13
Genesis 13:1-4 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai; Unto the place of the altar, which he had make there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
1. In some translations 'South' in verse 1, is translated Negev, why?
2. What kind of wealth, substance did Abram have?
3. Where had Abram's tent been 'at the beginning' (Gen.12:8)?
Genesis 13:5-6 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
1. Who was Lot?
2. Why was the land unable to 'bear' both Lot and Abram?
Genesis 13:7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
1. What is strife?
2. Can you name a few causes of strife?
3. Who else 'dwelt' in the land besides Lot and Abram and their families and herdsmen?
Genesis 13:8-9 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
1. What was Abram's solution to the problems of substance and strife among their herdsmen?
2. Do you think it was a fair and just solution?
Genesis 13:10-11 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
1. How is Jordan described in these verses?
2. Do you think that is the way Jordan looks today?
3. Lot took his first 'backsliding' step in these 2 verses, can you figure out what it was?
Genesis 13:12-13 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.
1. Abram dwelt where?
2. Who were the Canaanites?
3. What can you find out about them in your Bible Dictionary?
4. What city did Lot pitch his tent near?
5. Lot has taken another step into 'backsliding' in these 2 verses, can you find the cause?
6. Did Sodom and Gomorrah exist when Lot and Abram set out from Haran (Gen.12:4)?
Genesis 13:14-18 And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee. Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.
1. What direction was Abram to look and for what purpose?
2. Verse 15 says '...to they seed forever'. What is forever? What is 'thy seed'?
3. '..as dust of the earth..', do you think Abram's seed numbers so many today? Where are they?
4. God promised Abram the land that Abram could, what, in verse 17?
5. Do you think the promises God made in the Old Testament are still binding covenants or contracts today?
6. Where is Mamre and Hebron?
7. Does Hebron still exist today?
