Genesis 2:1-2
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
1. What day are we up to?
2. Who rested? Who created?
3. How many times was 'maker' and 'His work' stressed here?
Genesis 2:3
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
1. A very important word was introduced for the first time in this verse, sanctified. If possible look this up in the *Hebrew and in an *old dictionary.
2. Why was this day sanctified?
a. To give us time to reflect on who created the beauty and awesome workings around us?
b. Because the creator understood the workings of the human body and knew it "required"
rest every seven days?
c. To lay on the couch and watch tv?
d. To spend one day a week in the Word?
(Hint there are 2 correct answers above).
Genesis 2:4-6
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
1. Had it ever rained upon the earth?
2. No? How were the plants watered? (see verse 6)
3. When do you think the earth felt it's first rain? (Genesis 6:13; 7:12).
4. Do you think there were deserts?
5. Do you think the North and South Poles were ice?
6. Do you see something in this verse that gives us a clue concerning the time that lapsed between the 7th day of creation and the forming of man?
(Hint: Everything had just been planted, "before it grew"; "there was not a man to 'till' the ground")
Genesis 2:7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
1. What is the 'Breath of Life'? (Psalms 33:6)
2. "God formed man". Look up the word 'formed'.
3. Reflect on the man's body for a moment and in your own words describe what you think of God's
"animated" sculpture?
4. What did God call His sculpture? (the last 2 words in the verse).
5. Where do you think our artistic gifts come from?
Genesis 2:8
And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
1. God just created the entire earth and planted vegetation. Why did He put the man in one corner?
2. Look up the words: omniscience and omniscient.
3. Do you think God's plan for man was already in motion?
4. In your own words can you describe what God's plan for Adam may have been and why?
Genesis 2:9
And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
1. Did the 'tree of life' fit into His plan and if so what do you think it's purpose was?
Genesis 2:10
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
1. It has been established that it doesn't rain so how did God water this special garden?
Genesis 2:11-14
The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
1. Look up the lands listed in these verses in a Bible dictionary and note a few important facts about each one.
2. God created in Genesis 1 the heavens, planets, sky, earth, plants, flying fowl, creeping and moving creatures, sea creatures, cattle and man. But there is something in this verse that wasn't mentioned before, what is it?(Hint it comes out of the earth).
3. Have ALL the animals been created yet?
4. Do you think God also created the water?
Genesis 2:15
And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
1. What was the "job" (or labor) of the first man upon the earth?
Genesis 2: 16-17
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
1. What is a covenant?
2. And who was the agreement (or contract) between?
3. What was the contract between God and the man?
4. **Did the woman also agree to this contract?
Genesis 2:18
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
1. God has decided Adam needs companionship and help so what does He create?
2. Woman? Read the following verse.
Genesis 2:19-20
And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; "but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him".
1. God creates what in this verse? (Genesis 1:20 and Genesis 1:24-25). Didn't He already create them? Where were they?
2. Who gave the animals there names? How long do you think a Bear has been called a bear, a horse called a horse and a dog, called a dog?
3. Do you see the supposition in verse 20 as to why God made the animals in the garden?
4. Does it suggest the woman was an after thought? Do you suppose they may be where some religions got the idea women were inferior? Do you think God would consider the woman inferior? (Proverbs 18:22; Ephesians 5:25; Psalms 127:3; Revelations 21:9).
Genesis 2:21-22
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
1. How was the woman created?
2. Why do you think God chose this method rather than creating her just like He created the man?
Genesis 2:23
And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.
1. What did Adam say about this new creation? If you read and re-read Adam's statement, what do you think Adam is saying or implying here?
2. What do you think Adam thought of this gift? Did he value it?
3. Why did he name her woman? What does the word woman mean?
Genesis 2:24-25
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
1. What does "cleave" mean?
2. What is meant here by 'one flesh'?
3. Look up naked in the dictionary. Was God ONLY saying they were 'without clothes' or something
else is implied as well?
**Bonus Question from Genesis 16:17
1. Why was the woman thrown out of the garden with Adam when she had not been created at the time of the
contract (covenant) between God and Adam?
*Hebrew. You can use a Strong's Concordance, which has Hebrew and Greek meanings in the back.
*Old. The reason for an old dictionary is that meanings have not been altered or words removed and you get a much better definition of Biblical words.
